Why I am a Catholic

Why I Am A Catholic
By G. K. Chesterton
From Twelve Modern Apostles and Their Creeds (1926)
Reprinted in The Collected Works of G.K. Chesterton, Vol. 3 Ignatius Press 1990

The difficulty of explaining "why I am a Catholic" is that there are ten thousand reasons all amounting to one reason: that Catholicism is true. I could fill all my space with separate sentences each beginning with the words, "It is the only thing that . . ." As, for instance, (1) It is the only thing that really prevents a sin from being a secret. (2) It is the only thing in which the superior cannot be superior; in the sense of supercilious. (3) It is the only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age. (4) It is the only thing that talks as if it were the truth; as if it were a real messenger refusing to tamper with a real message. (5) It is the only type of Christianity that really contains every type of man; even the respectable man. (6) It is the only large attempt to change the world from the inside; working through wills and not laws; and so on........

Hey Adam, where did you get this picture? Are you sure that this is G.K.? Almost all of his photos show him with glasses. And this guy doesn't look like most of his photos.

I love Chesterton.

(1) It is the only thing that really prevents a sin from being a secret.

Does that include the secrets kept by priests who have been accused of molestation and the clergy that has worked hard to defend these criminals and keep it a secret?

(2) It is the only thing in which the superior cannot be superior; in the sense of supercilious.

We are not equal in the catholic view, we are divided by our works. Some of us will be in purgatory longer and some will be saints. The pope alone has the authority to speak on behalf of God and his words when spoken about the church are as good as scripture. Sounds like a system where some are looked on as superior.

(3) It is the only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age.

Not sure I understand why you have chosen to preface these with the catholic church is the only thing. I was under the assumption that we are freed from this world and all of the evils therein through Jesus Christ. Yes he is the head of the church and that is another blog topic, but its kind of like putting the cart before the horse. Jesus first, then church.

4) It is the only thing that talks as if it were the truth; as if it were a real messenger refusing to tamper with a real message.

That is almost laughable Adam. The whole theory behind Sacred tradition shows that the Catholic church is not founded on the truth of scripture. Refusing to tamper? When was the Apocrypha cannonized? The 1600's? Not by the early church fathers, but it does help with certain Sacred traditions.

6) It is the only large attempt to change the world from the inside; working through wills and not laws; and so on........

So the protestant church does not teach the Biblical truths that will bring about change in the believer from the inside out? Wills, not Laws? What about the Vatican councils that set forth laws that the catholic church must adhere to. I hope that you will someday follow after our Lord Jesus Christ with the same fervor that you defend the catholic church.
